Manufacturing Consent
The video utilizes the technique of incorporating multiple shots of the scale and artificiality of the media. The various shots of media being mass produced promotes the concept of the mass production and alteration of the media to maximize financial profits for corporations. At the very beginning of the video, when the television announcer is broadcasting on the large, multi-television display screen, the first thing he states is the size and magnitude of the video installation, followed by a named television channel company that is behind the funding of this project. By revealing to the viewer this scene, the documentary is boldly defining what media has become in society. It serves as an effective initial scene to reinforce the concept of the propaganda model; in which the corporations become more concerned with making a profit and are then subject to excessive advertisement and biased information. As a result, the media becomes nothing more than a product to be sold to the masses. The video reflects how the commodification of the media was an inevitability, and as a result, how it now pervades society.
