We can consider Rachel Maddow as a critical thinker because they fit the definition of Edward Glaser as “(1) an attitude of being disposed to condier in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one’s experience.” For example, how is someone to Maddow is a Rhodes Scholar, activist for aids at one point in her life and is lesbian. She is a smart person and is passionate about what she believes in. Being a former activist and being lesbian, she was probably challenged as a person and probably challenged many times by people who just didn’t understand her point of view. Jon Stewart is a critical thinker by Richard Paul’s definition of “improving the quality of his or her thinking by taking charge of the structures inherent in thinking and imposing intellectual standards upon them.” This is because he keeps up with the news and he talks about what is going on in the world with his own personal spin on it. Although he uses humor, he must be knowledgeable about the topic to find the problems in it and be able to make fun of it. Finding ways to make the news funny is thinking critically itself because you are using what you know as a normal person in society, taking advantage of all the news given to you through the different forms of media and establishing your standpoint on each topic using your past experiences and beliefs.
In Frank Rich’s article, “The Rage is Not about Healthcare” Rich is definitely the critical thinker. He goes above and beyond to consider that a gay man and an angry civil rights activist are the least of the democratic parties concern, It is the people that are changing and that are no longer their side. He interpreted what is changing in the government system and relates it to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 where the same situation of great change in the society brought up awful remarks from some of the senators like “usurpation of states’ rights that would force you to admit drunks, a known murderer or an insane person into your place of business” and now “Kill the Bill” and “Hell no, you Cant.” He brings up the idea that the dynamics of society is changing, we have a black president, female speaker of the house and a Latina in the supreme court. I would have never thought about this unless someone has explained this to me like Rich did. He is a critical thinker because he brings up this new ideas about politics that many of us have not realized or understood before.
